Finaly, Google decided to take a step forward on the Google+ social media endeavor and ditched the old long nosense numbered URL for a personalized, easy to remember one. It looks like: www.google.com/+YourName or www.google.com/+YourName
Custom URLs are short, easy to remember web addresses that link directly to your Google+ profile or page (like our Google+page URL: google.com/+TibiDesign ). They make it easier for you to connect with others, as well as promote your content. It is part of Google Plus’ new initiative “Google+ Direct Connect".
Let's see what is that and how to get your Google+ custom URL:
It looks like another step for Google towards a more traditional social media site. Facebook , Twitter and Pinterest already have the custom URLs in place. Google also went for a complete flat design to keep pace with the late flat design trend.
What is Google+ Direct Connect?
Google+ Direct Connect (GDC) let’s users navigate to your Google+ Page when using Google Search. When searching for a brand or celebrity, you can put a ‘+’ in front of the search term. When you use the ‘+’ operator before your search query, it tells Google that you want to find a Google+ page. Try it yourself: search for "+Name" where Name is a wekk known company or person of interest.
How to get your Google+ custom URL
First, your profile need to meet the following criteria, in order to be eligibile:
- Has a profile photo, and
- Has at least 10 followers, and
- Has an account that's at least 30 days old
For the business page profiles:
- The profile is linked to an existing business website, or
- It's a verified local business (verified by Google Local)
You can get the custom link by 2 ways:
- Follow the notification email from Google
- Log in to your Google+ profile/page and follow the tab saying "Get your custom URL"
If you don't see that tab, just go to About - Links and click your Google+ profile link.
So far the team at Google wasn't very consistent with the way they notify or verify the eligibility, as I've heard about cases when they were not eligible but still got their custom URL and vice versa.
I've seen people complaining that they got from Google a wrong name, or it's not what they want. Unfortunately, as it for now it can't be changed for pages, but you can do it for names. As the name on your Google+ profile should be consistent over your other social media accounts, in Google authorship, business website's title tags, local listings and social media platforms, you want to make sure that happens. So if they sent you a different profile name or you need to change it anyway, go to About- Links (like you would want to add a link) and it gives you the option to change it.
Hopefuly this was a complete info for you and you got your Google+ custom URL. Feel free to leave comments about your case, or if you need any help with your Google+ profile or page.
