What is SEO
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine's "natural," or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic"), search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users. - Wikipedia
So, what is the most important step for Search Engine Optimization?
SEO First Step
A percentage as high as 85% of the Internet users use search engines to find what they need. So, the importance of SEO and SEM (Search Engine Marketing) became more obvious than ever before. Especially with the crowd of search engines out there, and more and more to come.
It became very clear lately that the first step you take into SEO is to start writing a blog on your website. Some may say the first steps are to add the proper meta tags: page titles, descriptions, keywords. I consider those are coming with the blog writing, not before.
To be more exact, this a first step of a long and tedious journey to search engine optimization, but it can be a journey full of satisfactions and fun, and you will get to learn a lot about SEO and all that for free. And you get to make a lot of new friends too. There is always the expensive alternative of paid listings. Sign up for Google AdWords program, select your keywords, set up highest winning bid and your website will appear at the very top and in right column of search results that include your keywords. It sounds simple, but there are several problems that must be mentioned:
- First - not all businessmen have sufficient funds for such Internet campaigns. If you just start your business online, most probably you're ready to spend some cash, but you'd like to escape serious investments.
- Second - people who use Google often know where paid advertisements are located and they expect to see paid service or product there. And usually they won't click those links.
That is why people usually prefer clicking the results of organic search first.
Back to the blog, you need to know that Google loves content, especially fresh content, so you can say that Google loves blogs. With one condition, to update the blog at least once a month. Once a week sounds way better though.
With more details about why Google loves blogs and how to properly write a blog, I will come back with a different blog post.
So don't be afraid, and start writing. It's about your business which you know the best; just write about what you do and you will see it's not hard at all. If you create a product, write about how it's done; if you sell a service, write about how you execute it, etc... I am more of a technical person, not a writer obviously, and I never thought I will ever write something.
Update, Nov 2013: it's almost two years since I started the blog, and I feel a lot more comfortable about writing. I started to even write content for my clients' websites and blogs. Also, as a clear example, I can tell you that my blog is bringing the majority of my organic traffic to my website.
Until next time don't forget the most important thing in writing a blog: content is king!
